Former SHATPS Director-at-Large, Vice President, President and
Skavaril Award winner Michael D. Mueller of the U. S. was the final speaker at
the society's May 13, 2010 meeting in London. Mike narrated a PowerPoint
slide show entitled "Eight Months on St. Helena, Three Weeks on Ascension, and
Fifteen Days on Tristan da Cunha." While this was a fascinating travelogue
about Mueller’s 1999 South Atlantic sojourn, the talk was also about his mental
journey. Mueller served as president from 1994 to 1997 and more recently
co-edited Thirty Years of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
Philately with Past President and Skavaril Award winner Dr. Peter McCann.
He has also authored many articles and tributes for the South Atlantic
Chronicle.
Mueller describes himself as a finicky accumulator rather than a philatelist.
His interest in the islands visited by Charles Darwin – St. Helena in particular
– led him to become a member of our society in 1990. He is also a member
of the Tristan da Cunha Association, the Friends of St. Helena, and The
Explorers Club.
